Boys & Girls
Before going to the United States for graduate study at SVA, my last course at the Renmin University of China was a course called "Composition Studies". The course required me to select a work from art history and make compositional changes to create thirty-two small A4-size drafts in three weeks. I chose one of the photographs in the series work called "The Last Resort", which was made by British photographer Martin Parr as the source material for my adaptation. During that time, I experimented with all the creative methods that had come to my mind before, whether simple, complex, or once considered ineffective. I did not resist this kind of attempt to go beyond the creation methods which are familiar to me. On the contrary, I thought it was quite necessary since I knew that the machines, supplies, space, and even time and energy required for my current creative methods will no longer be available after I go to the United States. If I had to create a new path for my work in the U.S., these attempts were the things I had to do sooner or later.
The three weeks were too short, and simultaneously producing the work of "Fire" took up a lot of my time and energy, so I was failed to find a sustainable direction to explore in the time allotted. But the good thing is that at least I made a set of digital wallpaper works "Young Boys & Girls" which I was satisfied with. I think if I can use these patterned papers to wrap a gift for my girlfriend to make her happy someday, this series work would be more meaningful and these three weeks won’t be called a waste.
